Gnarly Vines, Not Just for Winos

January 25, 2008

Tonight, Gnarly Vines is hosting Ignacio Carballido as he offers tastings of Mezcal — an underappreciated liquor from Mexico.  In keeping with the general theme, they’ll also be serving chips and salsa.  6-9pm.

Wine Bar in old Mo-Bay Space

September 26, 2007

I think this is a few days old, but it seems that a wine bar will be settling into the old Mo-Bay space on Dekalb.

Which is nice and all, but more than a wine bar, I personally think the ‘hood could use a good dive bar with good (not too loud) music — like Rope, but closer to my end of the nabe.  A wine bar will have trouble competing with the excellent and popular Stonehome, whereas a plain old bar — darkish, scruffy, cheap, and dare I say, hipster oriented — would instantly attract the indie-rock contingent (yes, it does exist in Fort Greene).  Moe’s is great, but always loud and never playing my favorite music.

BYOB Restaurants in Fort Greene

September 24, 2007

Treat yourself and even a friend or two to a freakishly affordable dinner at one of the following BYOB restaurants in Fort Greene:

Keur N’ Deye
737 Fulton Street
Between South Elliot and South Portland
Hearty Senegalese food — the menu is short but interesting, perfect for the cooler months of the year and a bottle of red.
Closest wine shop: The Greene Grape

154 Carlton
@ Myrtle
A French-African fusion of food in a pint-sized venue.
Closest wine shop: Thirst

Black Iris
228 Dekalb
@ Clermont
Consistantly tasty Middle Eastern fare, plus some unusual pizzas.
Closest wine shop: Thirst

472 Myrtle Avenue
Perhaps technically in Clinton Hill, this is another dependable Middle Eastern joint.
Closest wine shop: Thirst Gnarly

In addition, Little Piggy Market at Lafayette and South Elliot is currently BYOB, and it’s big brother next door, The Smoke Joint, will be BYO-wine until sometime in November, when they expect to secure their liquor license.
