Irondale’s Premiere Production

The brand new Irondale Center, housed in a long unused but recently updated hall at the back of the Lafayette Presbyterian Church, begins its first run this week with the play London Cries. After the production’s time here, it will be off to the Old Vic in London:

Wednesdays – Saturdays at 8 PM, Saturdays at 2 PM.
$40/ $15 seniors and students

We went to a pretty great program last night at Lowpost, the new bar and performance space that’s just opened beneath Habana Outpost. It’ll be open year round, so we can all drink off the grid, even when it’s cold outside.

Irondale Center Opening Party This Saturday

The New Irondale Center space

The new Irondale Center, to be located in the old (and quite grand) Sunday School room of the Lafayette Avenue Presbyterian Church, is having an opening party this Saturday, Oct 11, from 1pm-10pm. There will be entertainment and beer from Brooklyn Brewery. The center will produce theater performances and provide educational outreach to the community. Looks to us like a fantastic addition to the hood.

According to Brownstoner, a guy who has built several gross buildings already is constructing a five-story apartment building on the site of the former garden shop on South Portland, next to Cafe Lafayette. Gross.

It’s just outside the Fort Greene Historic District.

Greene Grape Provisions: Just Us, or a Bait and Switch with Pricing

When Greene Grape Provisions opened, I remember thinking how nicely priced everything was, overall. But each time I go, it seems less reasonable. No joke, they tried to charge me over $3 for one plum recently, and $4 for a baguette.

It hasn’t driven me away completely — the cheese and fish selections are fantastic, and I love their salads etc. But it’s not the regular grocery destination I thought it would be when it opened.
