We’ll Be Back

December 28, 2007

Hi — apologies for sort of falling off the radar there.  Now that the holidays are sort of almost over, we’ll hopefully get our technical woes taken care of and be back in form in the next week or so.

 Happy New Year!!

Fire/Explosion at 99 Lafayette

December 10, 2007

At around eleven last night (give or take, I was asleep when it happened), an apartment on the top floor of 99 Lafayette, between South Portland and South Oxford, caught fire or suffered an explosion.  I was awoken by the windows shattering.  The firepeople proceeded to break the rest of the windows and then shoot the firehouse out of them.  They never turned on any lights, which suggests a gas leak (or a meth lab), right?  At any rate, it didn’t seem to be a typical fire.

It also didn’t seem like there was anyone in the apartment when the accident happened.

Anyone got the scoop?

Greene Grape Growing

December 6, 2007

Looks like the Greene Grape is moving into the space that formerly housed South Portland Antiques, on the corner of Fulton and South Portland.  The signage, in fact, is already up.  This location has to be at least twice as big as their current one.  More wine, yay!

UPDATE: The commenters and Brownstoner are right, the Greene Grape isn’t moving, it’s opening a specialty foods shop, which will include a fishmonger.  Fish, yay!

(Side Note: EBG is currently suffering from a misplaced camera and a crashed hard drive, so things have been a little bumpy and will probably continue to be so for the next few days.  Our apologies for the lack of photos and limited updating.)

Define “Cafe”

December 4, 2007

Brownstoner reports that a cafe is readying to open at 184 Dekalb, at Carlton, just a block off the park.  If it’s a coffee shop cafe, then I agree that there might be getting to be a glut on that stretch.  But if it’s a food-serving server-staffed cafe, it’s probably a different story.
